Mike Hromchak.

Who I am

Mike Hromchak is a senior data engineer who spent a decade doing analysis before he started building the infrastructure underneath it. That sequence matters. He knows what analysts actually need from a pipeline, and it shapes how he builds.

His career reads as a series of interesting problems: defense contracting for the NSA, financial crime investigations at JP Morgan and Navigant, ecommerce analytics at Artsy, social media scale at TikTok, and now data engineering for clients across retail and QSR. The thread through all of it is a preference for mission-driven work. When the problem means something, he does better work.

How I work

Mike treats data problems the way a good doctor treats a patient: no emergencies, just things that need diagnosing. Calm and methodical, he explains what he finds to people who aren't looking at the same data.

A fast learner, he does his best work when he understands why the work matters. That orientation shows up in how he handles ambiguity. Rather than waiting for a complete spec, he asks enough questions to understand the goal, then builds toward it.

What I work on

Mike works on data pipelines, reporting layers, and analytics infrastructure. He's built systems for ecommerce platforms, drive-through AI tools, and retail data marts. His technical core is SQL and BigQuery, with experience in dbt, Looker, AWS Redshift, and SAP.

Recent engagements

  • QSR Built the ingestion pipeline and reporting layer for a drive-through AI ordering system, across 150 locations. Structured metrics around order coverage rates, stage-by-stage timing, and labor impact.
  • Western wear retail Built a BigQuery data mart that consolidates legacy POS data and SAP with an incoming Manhattan platform. Supporting a dozen-plus Tableau users through a mid-year system migration.
  • Art ecommerce / Artsy: Launched Buy Now, Make Offer, the platform's first on-platform transaction tool outside of auctions. During a period of industry contraction, on-platform GMV grew and the feature became a primary purchase mechanism through 2020 and 2021. Also built the multi-touch attribution model that redirected marketing investment toward email and organic search.

Background

Prior to consulting, Mike worked at TikTok/ByteDance, where he built the reporting framework for TikTok Shop's launch. Before that, Navigant, JP Morgan, and the NSA. He holds a BA in Economics from Penn State's Schreyer Honors College and an MBA from George Washington University.
